Grayton Beach

From Secluded Sanctuary to Beloved Coastal Retreat, Rooted in Tradition

Grayton Beach boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1885 by Army Major Charles T. Gray. Originally a modest settlement nestled along the Gulf Coast, the area began to take shape in 1890 when Army General William Miller and William Wilson moved to the region, laying out the village’s first streets and blocks. Though much of the early development has given way to modern growth, one notable structure from this period remains—the historic two-story home known as the Wash-A-Way. Located at the end of County Road 283, the Wash-A-Way stands as a silent witness to Grayton Beach's transformation over the decades, offering a glimpse into the past.

In the early 20th century, despite challenges such as difficult access and limited infrastructure, Grayton Beach began to attract vacationers. Drawn to the area’s pristine beauty, these early visitors helped establish the village as a beloved coastal retreat. Pioneering families, particularly the Butlers, were instrumental in its development, working to overcome obstacles and create a community that would eventually flourish as a popular getaway. With the construction of key infrastructure like Highway 98 and the Highway 331 bridge, Grayton Beach became more accessible, yet it retained the small-town charm that has always defined it.

Today, Grayton Beach remains a cherished village, valued not only for its unique character but also for its stunning natural surroundings. Protected by state conservation efforts, the area has preserved much of its original beauty, with its windswept dunes, crystal-clear waters, and lush forests offering a haven for both residents and visitors. Grayton Beach’s commitment to conservation ensures that this historic village continues to be a peaceful and picturesque destination, where history and nature coexist harmoniously.
